Cats and dogs can become comfortable companions, but friendship is not guaranteed simply because one animal is young.
Gradual, controlled introductions give a kitten and dog the best chance of building a peaceful relationship without creating a frightening first encounter.
Start With Separate Spaces
A new kitten should have a secure room containing food, water, a litter tray, hiding places and a bed. Settling into the home before meeting the dog reduces the number of unfamiliar things happening at once.
Begin With Their Scents
Cats Protection recommends scent swapping before direct introductions. A clean cloth can be used to collect each animal’s scent so the other pet can investigate it without facing them physically.
Keep the Dog Controlled
During an early meeting, the dog should remain calm and on a lead. This prevents sudden chasing and gives the kitten more control over how close it wants to come.
Never Hold the Kitten Close
Do not restrain a kitten and push it toward the dog. Cats Protection specifically advises allowing the cat to choose whether to approach rather than forcing the interaction.
Provide High Escape Places
Kittens need somewhere the dog cannot follow, such as a secure high perch or protected room. Knowing that escape is possible can help prevent an introduction from feeling like a trap.
Reward Calm Behavior
Quietly reward the dog for staying relaxed around the kitten. Excited staring, lunging or chasing should not become part of the routine simply because the dog appears playful.
Supervise Their Time Together
Even a gentle dog is much larger than a small kitten and can accidentally cause injury during rough play. Keep early interactions supervised until both animals have demonstrated consistently calm behavior.

Some cats and dogs eventually sleep, play or relax together, while others simply learn to share a home peacefully. The successful outcome is comfort and safety—not forcing them to become inseparable friends.
