Maine Coon Stormy Babysits a Tiny Ninja Crew

A viral Maine Coon video looks at first like one black-smoke mother surrounded by a huge group of matching kittens.

The truth is even more interesting. Stormy is caring for two litters at once, because some of the tiny black kittens actually belong to her daughter Luna.

Stormy is a black-smoke Maine Coon featured by Wild Mane Maine Coons. Her dark coat becomes greyer in some areas because smoke coloring combines dark hair tips with a much lighter undercoat.

Some of the kittens gathered around Stormy are her biological babies. Their black-smoke coats resemble hers closely, giving the little group the matching dark appearance behind the playful “tiny ninjas” description.

Another Litter Was Visiting

The scene actually contained two separate litters. The more solid-black kittens belonged to Luna, Stormy’s daughter, meaning the adult cat was simultaneously a mother and grandmother.

Luna’s kittens were temporarily with Stormy while she cared for the larger group. They later returned to their own mother in a neighboring enclosure, making the viral scene more of a feline babysitting session than one enormous litter.

CFA describes a black-smoke Maine Coon as appearing black while resting, with its white undercoat becoming much more noticeable as the fur moves. This helps explain Stormy’s greyish appearance in certain areas.

Female Cats May Share Care

Closely connected female cats may help with another mother’s kittens. Behaviors can include grooming, guarding, playing and, in some circumstances, allowing youngsters that are not their own to nurse.

Grooming Is Important for Kittens

Mother cats spend significant time licking young kittens. Grooming keeps babies clean and, during the earliest stage of life, also helps stimulate bodily functions that newborn kittens cannot manage fully without maternal assistance.

Stormy’s Family Stole the Show

Once viewers know there are two generations and two litters in the scene, Stormy’s crowded nursery becomes even more memorable. She was not simply surrounded by her own “ninjas”; Grandma was helping with the next generation too.
