A tortoiseshell mother and her days-old kittens were discovered inside a cardboard box left in a wooded area of an Ohio park.
Although abandonment disrupted the mother’s ability to nurse, community support gave the entire family a safe foster home and access to veterinary care.
A Box Was Left in the Woods
A bystander found the cat family inside a cardboard box in a wooded section of Smith Park in Middletown, Ohio. The kittens were only days old when they were discovered.
The Mother Stayed With Them
The tortoiseshell mother remained beside her vulnerable kittens despite the frightening conditions. The litter included orange, black and calico babies, all dependent on immediate care.
A Rescue Stepped In
Joseph’s Legacy, an Ohio animal rescue organization, became involved after the discovery. Its volunteers arranged a safe placement where the family could recover away from the park.
Her Milk Supply Stopped
The rescue reported that the mother was unable to produce milk following the abandonment. Sudden stress, inadequate nutrition and health problems can interfere with nursing, making substitute feeding necessary for newborn kittens.
Caregivers Fed the Kittens
Because the kittens could not rely entirely on their mother’s milk, their caregivers had to provide additional feeding and close monitoring. Newborn kittens require frequent nutrition, warmth and help with basic bodily functions.
Donations Supported Their Care
An online fundraiser for the family received more than $1,600, according to the published report. The contributions helped the rescue meet the unexpected cost of caring for a mother and several newborn kittens.
Their Mother Gave Them Comfort
Although she could not fully feed them, the mother continued surrounding her kittens with affection, warmth and close contact. The rescue described her cuddling and caring for the litter in foster care.
The Family Was Recovering
The rescue reported that the mother and kittens were doing well while awaiting veterinary clearance. Adoption would come later, after the kittens had grown and the family had completed the necessary medical care.
