A mother cat named Pusha created an extraordinary mixed family when four orphaned baby squirrels were placed in her care.
The squirrels initially feared their feline foster mother. With time, they began eating, sleeping and playing beside Pusha’s own kittens.
Pusha Already Had Kittens

Pusha was raising four kittens at Bakhchisaray Miniature Park in Crimea when four orphaned baby squirrels needed care. Staff introduced the tiny newcomers to the nursing cat.
The Squirrels Were Nervous

The baby squirrels did not immediately accept Pusha. Park staff said they were initially afraid of the much larger cat, so the unusual relationship took time to develop.
The Animals Slowly Adjusted

Keeper Olga Fadeeva explained that the animals gradually became accustomed to one another. Eventually, the squirrels were comfortable remaining with the cat and her kittens.
They Shared the Nest

Once settled, the squirrels reportedly fed, slept and played alongside the kittens. The resulting photographs made the mixed litter look remarkably like one furry family.
Eight Babies Were a Lot

Pusha was caring for four kittens and four squirrels, more youngsters than she could feed completely on her own. Staff therefore provided additional feeding to make sure the smaller animals received enough nutrition.
Similar Cases Have Happened

In another documented case in Mississippi, a cat named Emmy accepted a baby squirrel that had fallen from its nest. She fed and groomed it alongside her own kittens.
It Is Not Safe to Copy

A heartwarming rescue should not encourage owners to deliberately introduce pet cats to wild squirrels. Cats are predators, and wildlife injured or caught by a cat may need prompt help from a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
Pusha Made an Unusual Family

What made the story special was not proof that the animals considered themselves siblings. It was their observable behavior: a nursing cat accepted orphaned youngsters of another species, and the animals eventually became comfortable sharing her care.
